Finisterre has become first fashion brand to collaborate with Aquapak, using its 100 per cent water soluble plastic bag which breaks down harmlessly into non-toxic biomass in soil and sea, as its packaging of choice.
Dr John Williams, Technical & Business Development Director at Aquapak Polymer, said: “The amount of pollution from traditional plastic packaging has, understandably, been a source of concern across the world. Many years of research and development have enabled Aquapak to develop an alternative that gives all the functionality of widely-used plastic whilst addressing the concerns they bring”Both parties have come together to tackle plastic pollution head on and deliver dissolvable packaging which breaks down harmlessly into non-toxic biomass in soil and sea.
“To see the completion of this project and the last 10 months’ work, is one of the most exciting moments in my career to date, to be able to launch something so ground breaking and literally world changing is an honour. To be partnered with Aquapak, leading the way for future generations is unbelievably inspiring,” added Niamh O’Laoighre, Product Development Manager at Finisterre.
The new packaging will begin to enter the supply chain with select knitwear lines this October, before a full roll out in February, where the packaging will be included with all garments in the spring 2020 collection.
Mark Lapping Chief Executive Officer at Aquapak Polymers said: “The science behind our products is a solution to the world’s plastic crisis and we are delighted that Finisterre is our first adopter in the European fashion world. We’ve worked with their packaging suppliers in Europe and Asia to use Aquapak’s material in their existing machines so its use can be extended to Finisterre’s whole range”.
